Not Paid. Not Required.
Just Committed.

Every member of Alarka VFD answers to no one's payroll — they answer to their neighbors. These are teachers, tradespeople, retirees, and young families who train together, respond together, and live alongside the community they protect.

Located at 3701 Alarka Road in Bryson City, our station covers a diverse response area that stretches from the Tuckasegee River valley into the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Our volunteers are certified in structural firefighting, wildland fire suppression, emergency medical response, and search and rescue.

We operate under the Swain County Emergency Management system and maintain close coordination with the Bryson City Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Tuckasegee Fire Department, and the National Park Service.

Protection Beyond
Firefighting

Our volunteers are trained for the full spectrum of emergency response — from house fires to mountain rescues — because that's what this community needs.

Structural Firefighting

Residential and commercial structure fires — the core of what we do. Our volunteers train continuously on interior attack, ventilation, and rescue techniques.

Wildland Response

Living at the wildland-urban interface means wildfire is always a possibility. We maintain ICS training, wildland engine operations, and coordination with the Forest Service.

Emergency Medical

Many of our members hold EMT or paramedic certifications, providing first-response medical care while awaiting advanced ambulance services from Swain County.

Hazardous Materials

Transportation incidents on US-19 and NC-69, chemical spills, and gas leaks fall within our response scope. We maintain awareness-level hazmat capability.

Search & Rescue

Mountain terrain demands specialized search and rescue skills. We train for technical rescue, swift water response, and backcountry patient extrication.

Fire Prevention & Education

From station tours and smoke alarm installations to school programs and campfire safety — prevention is where we start, every single day.

This Station Runs on
Good Neighbors

Alarka VFD is a volunteer department — meaning we depend on two kinds of people: those who show up when the alarm sounds, and those who keep the lights on when they don't.

There is no minimum income requirement to join. There is no paid shift structure. What we ask is simple: show up prepared, work as part of a team, and care about the people who live in this corner of the mountains.

  • Volunteer Firefighter — Full training provided; EMT certification a plus
  • Supporting Member — Assist with equipment, administration, and community events
  • Donor or Sponsor — Fund equipment, training, and community outreach programs
  • Community Partner — School groups, civic clubs, and organization tours welcome

Seven Decades of
Service

1954

The Beginning

A handful of Bryson City residents recognized that the growing community needed organized fire protection. Alarka Volunteer Fire Department was chartered with just six members and a donated pumper truck.

1972

New Station, New Commitment

The current station at 3701 Alarka Road was dedicated, built entirely through volunteer labor and community fundraising. It became the backbone of Swain County's western response district.

1990s

Wildland & EMS Expansion

As the wildland-urban interface grew, so did our training. The department added wildland firefighting certification and began staffing EMS responses alongside the rescue squad.

Today

Still Volunteer. Still Growing.

With over 40 trained volunteers, modern apparatus, and a continued commitment to community education, Alarka VFD remains one of the most active volunteer departments in western North Carolina.
